Vojna v skutočnosti nikdy nekončí, pretože aj keď sa už neodohráva na bojisku, veteráni, ktorí sa odtiaľ vrátia domov, musia žiť so spomienkami a zdravotnými komplikáciami celý svoj život. Túto smutnú pravdu si uvedomíme zakaždým, keď vidíme ľudí, ktorí boli vo vojne ťažko zranení.
Fotografi David Jay a James Nachtwey sa rozhodli zdokumentovať mladých amerických vojakov, ktorí sa z vojny v Afganistane a Iraku vrátili s ťažkými zraneniami. „Bol som svedkom a toto je môj dôkaz. Na nič z týchto udalostí sa nesmie zabudnúť a už vôbec nie opakovať,“ píše Nachtwey v projekte, ktorý sa nazýva Unknown Soldier, teda Neznámy vojak. Celá séria fotografií sa dokonca dostala aj do finále súťaže Magnum Photography Awards 2016 v kategórii Portréty.
Jay tvrdí, že „fotky majú reprezentovať možnosť na otvorenie dialógu o otázkach, ktoré nám nie sú zrovna príjemné a o problémoch, za ktoré sme zodpovední. Fotografie nemusia byť pre diváka na pohľad príjemné, no núti nás to čeliť strachu a zábranám, ktoré máme voči životu, smrti, sexualite, chorobách a ďalších.“ Realita nie je pekná, no takto vyzerá.
